THE FIRST ATTEMPT by the Islamist terrorists to influence the Australian election has taken the form of a bomb outside the Australian Embassy in Jakarta.

The only serious casualties so far are among the local population, but if there is collateral political damage by way of Mark Latham's opportunism, the Islamists will consider those lives well spent.

So far, no Labor reponse has been reported. The Government has advised against inessential travel to Indonesia.

Later: Mark Latham has been offered a briefing on the Jakarta blast, and Labor Foreign Affairs spokesman has accepted an invitation to travel to Jakarta with Foreign Minister Downer. So far, so good.

Later: The Jakarta Post reports at least eight locals dead.
