MAGIC CARPETS GET A RIDE on this morning's Life Matters.

A Melbourne University academic believes in them, and the leftist journal Meanjin (you won't get it on-line) thinks he's worth publishing, so it's worth a long and serious discussion on our Radio National.

I prefer teleporting. Somehow "Sweep me up, Scotty!" doesn't have the cred of "Beam me up!".

If you think this is a high-point of communard credulousness, consider Julie McCrossin's earlier guest, an official of the Australian Education Union.

This fine ideologue believes that teachers should teach kids her Union's doctrines on the Iraq war, among other causes, but do it "professionally".

Where is post-modern cynicism when you really need it?
